Be Brave

With her remarkable creativity and love for children, my friend Ashlee recently organized a Vacation Bible School (VBS) centered around a vibrant superhero theme designed to inspire kids to Be Brave. As we belted out lyrics and flailed along with hand motions to chase away fear—“Fear, fear, get out of here!”—the children’s voices rang through the Thatch like the sweetest kind of chorus. But as I listened, a quiet thought emerged: perhaps the message to Be Brave wasn’t just for the little ones. Maybe it was meant for the grown-ups too.

Throughout the week, our team shared Scripture-filled devotions, opened up about personal journeys, and tackled honest conversations about fear—the kind that sneaks into adulthood unnoticed. We talked about everything from choosing a college major and discerning service callings to taking the leap into launching a new business. Each discussion echoed the same truth: courage isn’t something we muster up alone; it’s something we ask for, receive, and practice through faithful, expectant prayer—like Daniel did, humbly and consistently, three times a day.

Then came our bonus day in Central America, and my own moment to Be Brave. Riding through the unlit streets of Belize after dinner, I found myself silently praying on our bus, kneeling in spirit and clinging to Jesus for protection. As the wheels turned on that narrow highway, I whispered the words to our VBS anthem:

“Fear, fear, get out of here…get out of here for good! See ya, see ya later…See ya later alligator!”

And just like Psalm 34:4 promises and the song Trust in God shares, “I sought the Lord, and He heard, and He answered.” When the white fence surrounding our home base—Oasis Ministry—finally came into view, I knew God had guided Pastor Ron and our busload of precious souls safely back, just as He had each day that week. It was grace in motion. Faithfulness on wheels.

So now I ask you: What fear might God be asking you to face right now? Where is He nudging you to lean in and Be Brave, trusting His strength and promises with a bold, expectant heart?

Psalm 139 reminds us:

“I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence…You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do…your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me.”

Maybe your God-Given Space looks nothing like mine. Maybe you’re facing something that feels overwhelming, uncharted, or impossibly big. If God is asking you to go All In, take comfort in knowing you’re not alone. You can always hum the tune—even without the adorable dancing and superhero capes—and He’ll hear you. He always responds to our need for a Godly Adventure.

  1. Thank you for writing the message I needed this morning. I am seeking the Lord for the courage to keep trusting and obeying. He will provide all things necessary, including courage. Grateful for you today and every day!
